6.6.13

Welcome back Year 12.

23.4.13

Year 12 Periods 2/3 Magazine Industry

Sorry that I am not in today......please use the time productively and do the work set.

Period 2

Media Ownership

Make sure you have created a fact sheet on TimeWarner (this should have been done over Easter). If you haven't done so follow the prompt questions below:

TimeWarner is a major media conglomeration with a large portfolio of media companies across the globe - go to the company website and find out:

1. What does the company's mission statement reveal about the aims of Time Warner?
2. Which other media companies do they own?

Why did Time Warner buy IPC media? What benefits are there to both the company and consumer?

More recently, Time Warner has indicated its plans to ditch its publishing wing and 'spin off' IPC media. Why do you think they want to do this?

Extension task

What do you think the benefits are for a media company like Time Warner to have a portfolio of companies spread out across the globe?

- Think potential for production and marketing synergies.......

What are the potential benefits to the consumer of having such large, powerful media companies owning the major share of media production across the planet (oligopoly)?

Conversely, what are the potential disadvantages?

Period 3

Now, spend 10 - 15 minutes updating your essay plan for the following question on media ownership
then give yourself 45 minutes to write your response.

Discuss the issues raised by media ownership in the production of media texts in your chosen media area.

Please leave your responses by the computer at the front of the room.

Year 13 Period 1 Narrative

Morning class - I am not in today but that's no reason not to work!

I photocopied sections from a chapter on narrative - the copies are on top of the laptop stack.

Please read through the sections focusing on:

1. Levi-Strauss (binary opposition)
2. Roland Barthes (textual codes)

Then:

Breakdown the essence of each theorist in terms of their approach to narrative into a bullet point fact sheet (no more than one side of A4). You can do this in pairs or individually.

Then:

Trying applying the theories to an analysis of your AS or A2 production focusing on the construction of narrative.

How useful are the theories to an analysis of the work you have created?

That should keep you going.

Mrs B

ps Don't forget you have mock on Friday.

22.4.13

Year 12 Period 1 Monday, April 22nd

Morning......

I photocopied some exemplar examination material focusing on Section B - it's by the front computer. Please read the examination answers from both candidates, then:

1.  highlight particularly effective sentences. Does the candidate offer detailed references to their chosen magazine/company?

2. write a summative comment about the clarity of the response.

Discuss your response to the answers as a whole group. Come up with 3 pointers from each response that will help you in the examination.

Now create a detailed essay plan in response to the following questions (focus on the NME/IPC/Time Warner case study). You can work in pairs for this task.

What significance does the continuing development of digital media technology have for media institutions and audiences?

Discuss the issues raised by media ownership in the production of media texts in your chosen media area.

Hope to see you all tomorrow.
