  1. “Media texts rely on cultural experiences in order for audiences to easily make sense of narratives”. Explain how you used conventional and / or experimental narrative approaches in one of your production pieces.
In my production pieces there is a lot of narrative work within the pieces. In both pieces I am heavily trying to use just the pictures to tell the story although there is a bit of speaking at the end of my AS piece it is not the main narrative point and only adds to it. In my A2 piece the narrative approach was very experimental and doesn’t rely on the editing with cutting between shots because it is all one shot so instead relied on the speed changes within the video.
In my AS production the video was almost teasing people in the way that they are never actually told anything straight up. The newspaper articles and the paper thrown around the room and dirty plates, food wrappers etc. are the things telling the story overall. This is quite a conventional narrative approach and can be seen in the intros to films like HULK and Sahara. They don’t rely on any audio or speech to explain what is going on. This is what I played on and hopefully the audience could start to understand what was going on in this piece.
In my A2, as I have already said, I tried to break the boundaries as far as I could by doing everything in one shot. This meant that to get the music to fit and to keep the audience interested and to help them make sense of it I had to do speed changes between some of the least important / most important parts within the video. This included the water being ‘unthrown’ and the main character. In this I put it in slow motion to help the audience to understand that this part is an important part of the video. This was the main character being ‘cleansed’ throughout the experiences in his life. So this narrative was extremely experimental.
So two very different approaches. Both used the pictures on the screen and hardly anything else to tell the narrative of the story although they both were done in very different fashion with the change of speed and the editing between the newspaper stories etc. Hopefully even though they were done differently the audience still managed to make sense of it all though.
