Documentary day- feedback

I will be giving feedback to Claire and Jackie in respect of the content and delivery of the documentary day last Friday. They are really keen to develop their work in schools and are open to comments/suggestions.

I have my own thoughts and suggestions but I would also like your feedback - as the day was ultimately designed to introduce you to documentary making.

So can you please post your thoughts...it might be useful to:

1. Comment on 3/4 things that you learned about the documentary making process
2. Comment on the method of delivery
3. Make suggestions for improving the overall structure of the day.

Thanks

  1. 1. A few things that i learnt from the documentary day were all the different roles within the industry such as camera operator, director and researcher and what they meant. I also learnt what a documentary must include to be interesting and successful. I also learnt about interviewing techniques and skills and some TV and representation topics.

    2. I thought that the delivery of the presentation was interesting and fun and they explained the information clearly. I thought that more fun and involving tasks could have been used to make the day a little more exciting but overall i liked how they talked to us and involved us in certain activities.

    3. To improve the overall structure of the day i think that more exciting activities could have been available and maybe for them to have prepared some fun worksheets for us to do as a group or individually.

  3. We learnt all the different aspects of a documentary and i found it useful to go through different job titles such as director and producer because this made it easier to think about what to do in the future. Other things that were interesting were the aspects such as pegs and the running order of the programme.

The method of delivery was really good as i thought they seemed really enthusiastic about their subject which made it instantly more interesting. The separation between tasks and listening to them was good as well as it broke it up.

It would've been better if some clips/visual examples to demonstrate different parts were used instead of having to watch the two girls at the front all the time.

  4. In the day, I was awakened to the amount of work that actually has to go in to making a documentary. I also learnt a lot more about the role of a producer of a documentary, as I was previously unsure about their exact role. Finally, the research process was outlined very well, giving me a lot more insight as to what makes a good research team/interviewer.

I found the day very helpful, with the information being delivered in a way that was easy to keep up with. However, there could be more variation throughout the day with more interactive tasks, as I felt some people may have not been as engaged.

  5. It was a good day and I found it very useful and interesting learning about the documentaries and I would like to express my thanks to Claire and Jackie for their guidance.

From them I learned a lot about how you can work behind the scenes of a documentary, such as the different roles you can play i.e. producer, researcher, director etc; I learned a lot about how to structure a documentary to its full potential and overall it was a very good experience.

The method in which they delivered their presentation to me was very good, especially seeing as it fits the way in which I prefer to learn, through listening and engaging with the lecturer, however it would have been nice to have been given some visual evidence of how many of the aspects they talked about worked in real life documentaries.

  7. I found the documentary day very useful on Friday. I learnt more about the different roles involved, the process we go through to make documentary's and the different things my documentary should involve e.g. Vox pops and opening tease etc. I thought the method of delivery was very good, they were very clear and explained things thoroughly before asking us to complete tasks. However they could have showed examples to help us that little bit more. Or examples of documentary's from past year 13 students.

  8. I learnt that you have to include certain things within the documentary such as vox pops and stats etc. I also learnt that there are various different types of documentaries such as mocumentaries. I thought that the method of delivery was successful to an extent, however, they just talked and could of shown us examples of various documentaries. An improvement of structuring the day, could be to of broken up the talks a bit more by either watching clips or have us involved in games or something like that, which would of kept us more interested in the process of making documentaries.

  9. We learnt a range of new information about the documentary making process. Learning about the way that television uses a peg was really interesting and I have been able to see lately. The roles within the process gave us all an idea of what is involved within the making, i thought this was well put across. We also learnt about the running order, going from the opening teaser to the conclusion.

The delivery of this was good I found it all really interesting and worthwhile, the enthusiasm of the people help to get the information across.

The only thing i would suggest is some visual content, but only to show a few of their ideas.

    Overall i really enjoyed this.

  10. i did find the day really interesting, i learnt alot, and i thought the jackie and claire both delivered the information really well.
however, i think that the day should have been more interactive, and should have involved us moving around and doing things, because sitting and simply listening to them speak for five hours got extremely boring, and by the end i had lost all interest.

  11. 1. Comment on 3/4 things that you learned about the documentary making process

The basic components of a documentary.
The specific roles within a team.
The kind of role I might like to take in a production.

    2. Comment on the method of delivery

I thought the content was very informative and delivered clearly, however I feel that some other form of engaging us.

    3. Make suggestions for improving the overall structure of the day.

Maybe include some clips or more engaging media.

  12. I found the documentary day very useful on friday, as I learnt about all the work that goes into documentaries and other television programmes. Learning about all the different roles that take part in producing a documentary was interesting, as I got a better vision of how a documentary is put together.
I thought that the delivery was very good, although there could have been more visual stimulation, to give us a better idea of what the finishing product will look like.

  13. It was good that we learnt about different jobs within the televison making industry and how to make your pitch sound good to commissioners.
However it would have been more helpful if we had seen clips from both good and bad documentary's to help with the explanations instead of just trying to understand word explanations.
Generally I found it very helpful and informative but it was slightly dull just sitting and listening for 5 hours it would have been nicer to move around and see visual examples
